History of Lingerie

European Countries

Looking back to the first generation of lingerie, Europe and China saw early styles develop in 800 BC and 202 BC respectively.

Both sides of the lingerie show different styles including patterns, materials, function and names.

On this website are the cultural histories of lingerie from both Europe and China. Their initial underwear styles were very different until around the 1910s. After this time period, lingerie entered a new epoch not only in Europe but also in China.

What an essential product: Lingerie

Underwear has always been an extremely important product for women, from the past until now. In the contemporary age, there are no differences between European and Chinese lingerie. The biggest reason why people choose to wear underwear is to help them feel confident and comfortable.

However, in the past there were different lingerie types, based on different individual styles, techniques, societies and cultural trends from different time periods. Furthermore, there were considerable differences between the styles of lingerie in Europe and China, the key reason being their distinct social backgrounds.

History of Lingerie

China

The most important revolution in the history of Chinese underwear was after the republication period. Chinese underwear gradually began to develop similar styles to those in Europe.

It reflected women’s rising social status and improving moral freedom. With the advent of television and the internet, and as the world became a global village, more and more people started wearing bras instead of their traditional underwear such as corsets and the Dudou. Nowadays, traditional underwear is worn once again, but usually in performances as a special costume, rather than for comfort or practicality.
