There are three different purposes for wearing corsets. It is best known as a fashionable undergarment for both women and men. Additionally, if people have spinal problems, they may fitted with a form of corset to immobilize and protect the torso. Corsets are also used in sexual fetishism, most notably in BDSM activities.

On March 8, 1917, in the capital of the Russian Empire, Petrograd, a demonstration of women textile workers began, covering the whole city. This was the beginning of the Russian Revolution. Seven days later, the Emperor of Russia Nicholas IIabdicated and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote.
